Lakes Aquarium

Sightseeing attraction | Ulverston | England | United Kingdom

The Lakes Aquarium in Ulverston, England, is one of the most famous and visited tourist attractions in Cumbria and is situated on the picturesque southern shore of Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park. This fascinating facility, opened in 1997, offers an impressive journey through the water worlds of the Earth and is particularly popular among families and nature lovers. With over 30 naturally designed habitats, the aquarium showcases a variety of freshwater and saltwater creatures from around the world, as well as native species from the region presented in themed exhibitions. The combination of educational elements, interactive experiences, and a stunning location makes it an unforgettable destination.

The Lakes Aquarium is themed around the "Lakes of the World" and takes visitors on a journey from the mountain peaks of the Lake District to exotic waters. One of the highlights is the spectacular underwater tunnel, which provides a view of life beneath the surface of Lake Windermere. Here, native fish such as sturgeon, carp, and diving ducks swim directly above visitors' heads, creating an immersive experience. Other impressive exhibits showcase British marine life like rays and sharks from Morecambe Bay, as well as exotic animals like piranhas, clownfish, and seahorses. The playful Asian short-clawed otters, which can be observed in a specially designed underwater habitat, are particularly popular. In addition to fish, there are also reptiles such as caimans, amphibians like red-eyed tree frogs, and small mammals like marmoset monkeys, further enhancing the diversity of the aquarium.

Another unique element is the "Virtual Dive Bell," an innovative installation that virtually transports visitors into the depths of a lake and simulates encounters with animals like crocodiles or bull sharks. The exhibitions are not only visually appealing but also informative: Regular talks and feeding times, such as those for the otters or rays, provide insights into the lives of the animals and their natural habitats. For children, there is a special quiz trail that complements the experience in a playful way, while various events throughout the year keep visits varied. The focus is also on education and conservation, with programs dedicated to the preservation of the species and their habitats.

The park is designed to offer experiences both indoors and outdoors. The main exhibition is housed in a fully accessible building, including an elevator between floors, making it attractive to wheelchair users and families with strollers. Outside the aquarium, there is a café area with panoramic views of Lake Windermere, providing a relaxed atmosphere for dining with regional ingredients, including Starbucks coffee. A gift shop complements the offerings with souvenirs and themed items. The location directly at the Lakeside Pier also allows for arrival by boat via the Windermere Lake Cruise or the historic Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, making the visit a special experience and seamlessly integrating it into a trip to the Lake District.

The care of the Lakes Aquarium is exemplary, and efforts are continuously made to keep the exhibitions current and engaging. Visitors appreciate the diversity of the animals, the interactive elements, and the opportunity to learn about the local and global water world. However, there is occasional criticism: Some find the tour relatively short and the aquarium somewhat compact compared to larger facilities. The visibility of some animals, such as the otters, can also depend on their activity, which is not always guaranteed. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm for the loving design, informative content, and unique location prevails.

The Lakes Aquarium is more than just a tourist attraction – it is a place that celebrates the beauty and diversity of the water world while also raising awareness for its protection. Its connection to the natural environment of the Lake District, the combination of entertainment and education, and the family-friendly design make it a highlight for visitors of all ages. Whether as part of a day trip or as a standalone experience, the Lakes Aquarium offers a fascinating opportunity to discover the secrets of lakes – locally and globally – and to experience the wonders of nature up close.

I'm not the biggest fan of animals in captivity but this is quite a nice little aquarium. Showing its age in some respects but an interesting hour spent wandering around and not too expensive to get in. Probably best for younger kids but my two teenagers didn't complain.

My babies first visit to an aquarium and he loved it !! The aquarium was quiet so we had plenty of time to see each display and to read about the animals. The small underwater tunnel is very cool and the highlight of the trip

Much smaller Aquarium than the bigger competitors (such as SeaLife) but you are not paying the same price tag. Was well maintained, tanks clean and all wildlife seemed well and healthy. Enjoyed it but like I said before - small establishment so doesn't take that long to see everything.

Small and dated. Spent 30 minutes there whilst weather was torrential. Kids will probably love it. Got some nice photos

Excellent place to take young kids . Buy a combined ticket with either train or motor museum makes it brilliant value for money.

Second visit to the aquarium in recent years. Unfortunately this time was several empty cases and the ants display was also empty which I was looking forward to showing my daughter. Quite a small aquarium in comparison to some of the well known brands but still some interesting fish and insects. Wife was very sad to see the seahorses had also gone. Price wasn't too bad for a family ticket but didn't take long at all to get round as was quite busy and we felt rushed at most of the displays as there wasn't much viewing room for people to see so always had people waiting for you to move on.

A nice place but far far too busy. They really need to stagger entrance times as it was absolute carnage and at many points you couldn't move at all because of the amount of people in there at one time. It felt very claustrophobic and everyone was pushing and shoving. It's a real shame because there was plenty to see but I felt there was a clear health and safety risk with the number of people piling in at the same time. We wouldn't visit again.

Visited in December 2024. We visited on a rainy day so this place was a welcome retreat. However it was disappointingly small with mainly just fish. I'd say the highlight was the otters because we got to watch them being fed. You have to pay to park outside and there's no discount for aquarium visitors 🙄 We will probably not visit again.

It was far too busy and we could not see everything that we wanted too and the tanks were dirty and some of the tanks were empty and the toddler could not see anything unless someone carried him and loads of people were pushing and shoving and the toilets were disgusting and it was nothing like it was advertised and not worth the money.

The whole of this experience was beyond disappointing, many tanks were empty without reason there was far too many people pushing and barging past as well as this the tanks were disgustingly dirty and nothing like advertised at all. Was not worth the money or time, toilets were absolutely disgraceful as well.
